A mobile dental unit is a dream-come-true for MCDS. Ever since we launched the ‘MCDS Clinic on Wheels’ in April 2006, we have been toying with the idea of introducing a mobile dental care programme. It was providential that our good friends in Germany Mr. Ulrich Walter (World No.1 in Organic Foods) and Mr.Markus Ehning(World No.I in Show Jumbing), Germany Prompted by Mr.P.A.Jacob and family of the POABS Group(Nellayampathy, Palakkad, Kerala) Supported us with the necessary equipment.

The mobile dental clinic was launched during a public function attended by Thiru G.K. Vasan, Hon’ able Minister for Statistics Planning & Implementation, Govt.of India And Thiru M.K.Stalin Hon’ able Minister for local Administration, Govt. of Tamilnadu on the first of April 2007.

The unit is installed in a 16-seater mahendra van with sufficient storage facility, generator, comfortable seats for the medical team, overhead water tanks, wash basin etc.

The medical team consists of Dr.Ravikumar and Supporting staff.

This facility is meant exclusively for children in government schools. There a week the unit visits the schools identified in the slums of Chennai and neighborhood. The programme begins with an awareness programme on the various aspects of dental hygiene. This is followed by identifying those who need dental care and are taken to the mobile unit for an appropriate intervention.

The unit has already covered the Santhome primary school. The schools at Doomingkuppam and is now concentrating on schools at Kannaginagar, where about 20,000 families from various slums are relocated. the next stop will be Chemmenchery where thousands of families affected by the tsunami are relocated
